Proposed Flood Hazard Determinations for Nantucket County, Massachusetts
The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued a preliminary FLOOD INSURANCE RATE MAP (FIRM) for Nantucket Island. These flood hazard determinations may include the addition or modification of base flood elevations, base flood depths, Special Flood Hazard Area boundaries or zone designations. The Town of Nantucket has held two public forums presenting the new maps in an attempt to provide the public with this new information. There is a 90 day appeal period which will begin on January 17, 2013 for any property owner who believes their property will be adversely affected by the proposed flood hazard determinations. Click here to read the January 3, 2013 letter from FEMA.
Appeals must be coordinated and submitted by the Town of Nantucket for all property owners; appeals are based on possession of knowledge or information that the proposed flood hazard determinations are scientifically or technically incorrect.
