Dear Nantucket Business/Vendor/Association:
We are happy to announce that the 2011 annual Nantucket Triathlon was approved by the Town of Nantucket, is completely SOLD-OUT, and is on track to bring almost 1000 athletes and their families to Nantucket this summer for the race. Last year’s sold-out race of 750 athletes brought an estimated $1 million in business to Nantucket from lodging to restaurants to travel to retail. This year’s event is expected to bring even more business to the island on race weekend.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, July 23, 2011 – just 6 weeks away. The “rain date” for the event is Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the same time(s). The entire race will last approximately three (3) to four (4) hours.
NANTUCKET TRIATHLON SCHOLARSHIP FUND
This year we are excited to announce the creation of the Nantucket Triathlon Scholarship Fund which will provide merit-based scholarship moneys to student athletes with a Nantucket “connection” pursuing secondary and post graduate studies.
If you are interested in supporting the Nantucket Triathlon Scholarship Fund, in becoming one of growing number of race sponsors, in having a business presence at the event on race day or promoting your local business by providing a discount or coupon to the race athletes that can be included in the athlete’s race packet, please contact the race organizers at firstname.lastname@example.org or call Jamie Ranney – the race director - at 508-228-9224.
The event commences with an 8:00 AM swim start at Jetties Beach. The athletes enter the water in swim waves approximately three (3) minutes apart for a .25 mile swim. After completing the swim, the athletes complete a 13.4 mile bike ride to Madaket and back to Jetties Beach. The race finishes with a 3.4 mile run from Jetties Beach, up Cliff Road, around Lincoln Circle and back to Jetties Beach via Easton Street and Hulbert Ave.
IMPORTANT - ROAD CLOSURES
For the safety of the athletes and to minimize traffic congestion during the race, the Town of Nantucket and the Nantucket Police Department have approved road closures for various roads on Nantucket while the event is taking place along with traffic diversion plans around these closures.
A full list of the road closures on July 23, 2011 (or July 24, 2011 if the race is held on the rain date) and a full map of the triathlon traffic plan is available on the triathlon website at www.acktri.com/parking.php.
Road closures permitted by the Town from 8 AM to 12:00 PM on race day include complete closures and parking bans on Bathing Beach Road, Cliff Road, Madaket Road, Easton Street, North Beach Street, and a portion of South Beach Street.
These road closures will obviously affect other “feeder” roads such as Eel Point Road, North Liberty Street, various side streets on Cliff Road, Westchester Street, North Water Street and others as well as access to the Children’s Beach boat ramp on the morning of the race. We have worked very closely with the Nantucket Police Department and the Town for months in an effort to minimize the inconvenience of the event as much as possible while maximizing the safety of the athletes.
With an event of this size and to provide the greatest amount of safety for the athletes as well as to alleviate frustration on race day for the athletes, the general public, business owners and vendors, the race organizers wanted to bring the traffic plan to your attention well before the race so that you can get the event on your calendar and prepare well in advance for any adjustments you need to make for delivery schedules, operating hours, guests, etc., on race day.
Please note that the Nantucket landfill will be CLOSED on Saturday, July 23, 2011 to accommodate the race. The landfill will be open for its regular hours on Sunday, July 24, 2011 from 8 AM to 12:00 PM.
