31st Annual Running of Iron Teams Relay Sunday, June 26
33-mile, 6-leg cross-island race benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters, the islands one-to-one mentoring program for Bigs and Littles, will host its largest fundraiser Sunday, June 26. The event will attract approximately 250 participants and another 250-300 supporters and fans. It will also include about 75 volunteers who will be spread throughout the 33-mile route.
The Nantucket Iron Teams Relay, which attracts crowds of runners, swimmers, bikers and paddlers, begins at 10:00 AM, Sunday, June 26 at Jetties Beach. The 33-mile short run, swim, paddle, beach/all terrain run, bike and long run will end at The Chicken Box on Dave Street.
Dave Street will be the only closed road during the race as The Chicken Box represents the finish line of the event. Police details and the 75 volunteers will be dispersed throughout the course to aid the participants as well as direct traffic. Ham radio operators will be stationed on the course as well.
To ensure coordination of a secure, safe event, Big Brothers Big Sisters representatives met with the Police, Health and Marine Departments to layout the course and aid in the running of the 6-leg race. The event has received the approval of the Board of Selectmen.
Also helping with the event will be Nantucket Community Sailing, Sea Nantucket Kayaks, the Marine Department, and members of The American Red Cross.
The proceeds from the event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters on Nantucket. More information on both of these fund-raisers can be found at www.bbbsnantucket.org.
