HURRICANE IRENE UPDATE - SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2011 11:30 AM

Hurricane Irene has been DOWNGRADED to a Tropical Storm with possible intermittent heavy wind gusts through Sunday night. Islanders should be prepared for sustained winds reaching 20-40 mph with possible gusts up to 50-60 mph and 2-4 inches of rainfall. A storm surge of 2-4 feet at high tide at 12:01 PM on Sunday is anticipated. Localized flooding is possible; extreme caution is advised in coastal areas.
There have been a few reports of a downed tree limbs around the island that have been attended to by the Department of Public Works and rising surf in the Madaket/Smith Point area however there are no voluntary evacuation orders on any area of the island. There have been no reports of injuries, erosion or power outages on the island.
