The Nantucket Emergency Operations Center is being deactivated as of 1:00 PM on Sunday, August 28, 2011. The Nantucket Emergency Management Agency will continue to monitor the storm until it is fully expended but Town departments will resume normal operations. Emergencies should be directed to 911 or to the police department’s non-emergency line at 508-228-1212.
Current conditions indicate that the storm event is completed for the Nantucket area and Hurricane Irene is DOWNGRADED to a weak Tropical Storm by the National Weather Service. Be advised that there will continue to be possible intermittent heavy wind gusts through Sunday night. Islanders should be prepared for sustained winds reaching 20-40 mph with possible gusts up to 50-60 mph and 2-4 inches of rainfall. Coastal erosion and dangerous rip currents on the south-facing coastal areas remain a threat through Monday; extreme caution is advised in all coastal areas.
There have been no reports of injuries, erosion or power outages on the island.
