Sign regulation has existed in the historic districts of Nantucket and Siasconset since 1956 and throughout the island since 1972. In 1981 the Historic District Commission (HDC) of Nantucket adopted its first comprehensive set of regulations governing the design and use of signage across the island. The Historic District Commission created a committee, the Sign Advisory Council (SAC). The mission of the Sign Advisory Council (SAC) is to assist applicants during the Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) review process by assuring that sign applications meet the established sign guidelines. The SAC advises applicants and may suggest modifications consistent with the guidelines. The SAC will make recommendations on the application to the full Historic District Commission board. Sign regulations are supplementary to the architectural regulations and have been amended from time to time since the early 1970’s.
Answers to most questions and procedures can be found by reviewing The Sign Book, Regulations and Guidelines for Signs on Nantucket Island. Additionally, the SAC encourages the applicant to discuss their sign needs at any SAC meeting.
