BABY GOODS
Donate: A Safe Place Nantucket (5B Windy Way, 508-228-0561) accepts donations of some unused/unopened items.
Reuse: Reusable baby items can be posted in a local online free and for sale group for pick-up or brought to the Take-It-or-Leave-It.
BAGS
Consider using reusable bags.
Reuse: Local thrift shops and the Nantucket Food Pantry (10 Washington Street, 508-901-1320) collect paper grocery bags for reuse.
Dispose:
- Paper bags go in Compostable Waste (C).
- Plastic bags go in Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC).
BALLASTS
Dispose: Ballasts from fluorescent lamps are collected with Fluorescent Lamps in a bin by the attendants’ shed at the Recycling Center Drop-Off. Please see an attendant with any questions.
BAND-AIDS AND GAUZE
Dispose: Band-aids and gauze are Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC).
BATTERIES
Recycle: Batteries are collected in a Battery Recycling container at the Recycling Center Drop-Off.
BEDS
Reuse: Furniture in working condition can be posted in a local online free and for sale group for pick-up or brought to the Take-It-or-Leave-It. Some local thrift stores accept donations of some furniture items.
Dispose: Furniture is Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC). Use the Scale House for items and quantities weighing more than 40 lbs.
Recycle: Bring mattresses to the Scale House for drop-off instructions.

BICYCLES
Reuse: Bicycles in working condition can be posted in a local online free and for sale group for pick-up or brought to the Take-It-or-Leave-It.
Recycle: Bicycles are Scrap Metal.
BOAT PLASTIC
Recycle: Storage shrink wrap can be recycled through Dr. Shrink. Contact Madaket Marine at 508-228-1163 for more information.
Dispose: Bulky rigid plastics are Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC). Use the Scale House for quantities weighing more than 40 lbs.
BONES
Compost: Meat and fish bones are Compostable Waste (C).
BOOKS
Reuse: Books in readable condition can be brought to the Take-It-or-Leave-It.
Dispose: Paperback books go in Compostable Waste (C). Hardcover books go in Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC).
BOTTLE CAPS
Recycle: Bottle caps and beer caps, as well as jar lids, go in Tin/Aluminum Recycling.
BOTTLES
Bottle deposit: Stop & Shop (31 Sparks Avenue) and The Islander Package Store (15 Old South Road) have bottle deposit machines. Local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts collect aluminum cans in the Boy Scouts’ Aluminum Can Shed by the Recycling Center Drop-Off as a fundraiser.
Recycle: Empty the bottle. Plastic bottles go in Plastic Recycling and glass bottles go in Glass Recycling (metal bottle lids, as well as glass jar lids, go in Tin/Aluminum Recycling). Metal reusable bottles go in Scrap Metal.
BUBBLE WRAP AND INFLATABLE PLASTIC PACKAGING
Reuse: The UPS Store (61 Old South Road, 508-325-8884) accepts some inflatable packaging for reuse. Please call ahead.
Dispose: Bubble wrap and other inflatable plastic packaging are Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC). Please release air from package pillows.
BUILDING AND REMODELING MATERIALS
Reuse: Materials that are unused or can be reused can be posted in a local online free and for sale group for pick-up.
Dispose: Building materials are Construction & Demolition Waste. Use the Scale House for quantities weighing more than 40 lbs. Quantities weighing less than 40 lbs. can go in Non-Recyclable/Non-Compostable Waste (NRNC).
