House Move on Nantucket - Nantucket Current Instagram Post on November 17, 2023

Nantucket Current Instagram post on Friday, November 17, 2023 regarding House Moves: "House moves - whether it’s a structure being recycled or a modular unit - have been critical to the island’s affordable housing efforts, and have allowed some year-round islanders to buy a home that would have otherwise been unattainable. The practice also keeps a significant amount of demolition debris from ending up in the municipal landfill.").

Town of Nantucket Responds: The Town of Nantucket does not permit the disposal of Construction & Demolition (C&D) debris at the Landfill located at 188 Madaket Rd. C&D materials brought to the Transfer Station undergo a meticulous sorting process to extract items prohibited for disposal and to segregate recyclable materials as outlined by the MassDEP, Division of Solid Waste regulations. Once the C&D load is sorted and cleared, it is then transported to an authorized Massachusetts C&D Recycling facility for further processing. This facility ensures compliance with MassDEP Solid Waste guidelines by achieving a Process Separation Rate (PCR) of at least 15% through advanced processing methods.
