Nantucket Receives Third $20,000 Survey and Planning Grant from Massachusetts Historical Commission

MHC

The Town of Nantucket is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a third $20,000 Survey and Planning Grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC).

This latest grant will be used to continue the town’s on-going survey efforts outlined in its recently completed Historic Properties Survey Plan.

The funding for this grant was allocated through Congress, where State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) are required to provide 10% of their funding to Certified Local Governments (CLGs). Nantucket was one of six CLGs chosen for this federal funding.

The FY22 survey project is currently underway and consultants from Public Archaeology Laboratory (PAL) will be on-island next week to conduct survey work along Pine, Pleasant & Main Streets to wrap up the Fish Lots Neighborhood. Following that, they will travel over to Brant Point and start their survey work there. The FY23 survey grant project will be used to continue surveying in the Brant Point area.

“We have already seen how beneficial these updated survey forms have been during HDC reviews!” said Holly Backus, Town’s Preservation Planner and Local CGL Coordinator. “I’m very happy to see the momentum going with MHC support and guidance!”
