1. Is there a Meals on Wheels Program on Nantucket?

Yes, Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc. (ESCCI) is the Area Agency on Aging for Cape Cod and the Islands. ESCCI provides meals for home-bound individuals 60 years and over who are unable to prepare their own meals.

The menu is varied and the meals are nutritionally balanced, prepared without added salt, and consist of a dinner, dessert (diabetic desserts can be ordered in advance), milk, bread, and margarine.

2. What is Congregate Lunch and where is it served?

Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc. (ESCCI) is the Area Agency on Aging for Cape Cod and the Islands. ESCCI provides a social, nutritional lunch, which also celebrates birthdays monthly and holiday meals. This program, called "Congregate Lunch," is for individuals 60 years of age and over or disabled persons.

Lunch is served weekdays from noon to 1 p.m. at the Saltmarsh Senior Center:

For more information and to make or cancel a reservation for lunch, please call Mark Budaj, ESCCI Nutrition Coordinator at 508-228-4647. A voluntary donation of $2 is suggested.

3. What is the Nantucket Food Pantry and where is it located?

The Nantucket Food Pantry program makes nutritious food and staples available to anyone who does not have financial resources to buy food for themselves or their family. This food is intended to supplement their present food resources. The program is administered by Andy Reis and operates Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4-6 p.m. out of the Greenhound Building:

Please use the entrance on Candle Street. If these days and hours are not convenient for seniors, please call Andy at 508-228-7438 to make other arrangements.

4. Is there a Telephone Reassurance Program on the island?

Yes, the Nantucket Police Department offers a free Telephone Reassurance Program to provide peace of mind to those seniors who live alone. For more information, please call the Nantucket Police Department at 508-228-1212 or access them online.
